History

"The impressive church we revere today can trace its roots back to the days when it was a modest structure propped by bamboo framework shaded by a roof of overlying palm leaves and mats for the congregation to worship on, constructed in the midst of 31 cents of land granted by Kochakan K.M. David to Perumpally Dr. Geevarghese Mar Gregarius Thirumeni."
It is a testament to the Thirumeni's perseverance, dogged determination and spiritual strength that this humble shack in the once little known village of Perumpally has risen to an imposing edifice of international renown, now proudly called the Perumpally church. We believe that the Elamkulam Soonoro church will continue to grow to dizzying heights with the blessings of the Holy Grace. On August 15, 1974, during the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, the Perumpally Thirumeni laid the foundation stone of the chapel. On October 23, under the name of St.Mary's Chapel, the congregation received its first Holy Communion beneath the shade of palm leaves. The initial Holy Communions were administered by Jacob Malpan ( the deceased Jacob Mar Timothious Metropolitan, Thrikomangalam). Although the makeshift church collapsed under strong winds and rain on June 16, 1978, under the guidance of Chev. P.C. Varghese and K.M. David, and the unwavering support of over 50 families, a new church was constructed by the grace of God and the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary. On April 27, 1980, an informal Consecration of the newly built church was performed.

On March 10, 1982, Patriarch H.H.Igantius Zakka I Iwas Bava graced the occasion along with H.G. Baselious Paulose II Bava and other Metropolitans to perform the koodasha and the Holy Communion, thus formalizing the name of the church and dedicating it to Mother Mary.

On September 25, 1991, the St.Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox congregation was formally recognized; Cdr. K. Kuriakose, founding president of the congregation was also feted for his long term service in this capacity. It is not uncommon to hear of divine interventions in the lives of those who come to offer prayers at this church in the midst of despair, be they childless couples or diseased patients, Christians or non-believers. On February 22, 1999, Perumpally Thirumeni passed away. The request of the congregation that the church be acknowledged as a Simhasana Church was headed by the Patriarch Bava. H.G. Mar Eulios Kuriakose Thirumeni succeeded the Perumpally Thirumeni as the parish Metropolitan with the assent of the Bava.

On August 19, 2001, and September 14, 2001, H.G. Thomas Mar Divanasius inaugurated the newly built front facade of the church and the adjacent structures. On September 26, 2004, Patriarch Patriarch H.H.Igantius Zakka I Iwas Bava raised the rank of the St.Mary's Soonora church to that of a patriarch cathedral. The Bava also inaugurated the Perumpally Mar Gregorious Memorial complex which includes a parish hall and Bishop house as well.

On September 14, 2007, Deputy Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Divanasius and  Dioscese Metropolitan Kuriakose Mar Eulios laid the foundation stone for the new cathedral, following which the construction maintained a steady pace. H.G. Baselios Thomas Catholica Bava, Parish Metropolitan Mar Athanasius Geevarghese, and Metropolitans Dr. Abraham Mar Severios, Joseph Mar Gregorius, Thomas Mar Timothius, Mathews Mar Ivanios, Geevarghese Mar Divanasius, Mathews Mar Ephraim, Kuriakose Mar Theophilos, Geevarghese Mar Curilos, Elias Mar Athanasius, Kuriakose Mar Clemis, Zacharias Mar Pilaksinos and Isaac Mar Osthathius honoured us with their presence in the cathedral to inspect the ongoing construction and give forth suggestions regarding the efforts.

We also honour the services of former vicars who have led the congregation in an exemplary manner -  Jacob Mar Timothius (Thrikothamangalam), Rev. K.T. Zachariah Korescopa, Fr. George Manayath, Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Kaniyath (lifelong), Fr. Jacob Kuruvilla, Fr. Samson Kuriakose, Fr. Prince Mookanottil, Fr. Jose Mathew Thachethukudi, Fr. Cherian Kottayil, Fr. Dilish Elias and Fr. Eldho Alukka.

We also extend our gratitude and love to our current parish Metropolitan Mar Athanasius Geevarghese Thirumeni, vicar Mulerikkal Benjamin Rambachan and assistant vicar Rev. Fr. Gregor R. Kolanoori.
